Of the more than 500 walled settlements in southwestern France, more than half of them are located in the MIDI-PYRÉNÉES, France's largest region. Perhaps one of the most romantic ways to witness the region's rich diversity and heritage is by boat, floating leisurely down the Canal du Midi. Whichever means of transportation you choose, don't miss out on the other hotspots of gay and lesbian action in Cahors, Albi, and Toulouse, which boasts France's second-largest university as well as a large gay and lesbian community. You may also want to consider a trip to the amusingly named city of Condom on the Baïse River, famous for its Armagnac and foie gras. A stunning new feat of architectural engineering and beauty, the Millau bridge spans the River Tarn in the Massif Central mountains. At 984 feet, it is the tallest bridge in the world-and even tops the Eiffel Tower. AQUITAINE is best known for the capital of wine itself, Bordeaux, -only three hours from Paris by TGV! In the surrounding area, there are endless opportunities to sample the goods, so bottoms up! The neighborhoods of Saint-Pierre, City Hall, and Chartrons offer a vibrant gay life. Traveling south along the coast, you'll discover Hossegor and Biarritz, two other gay-popular areas.
