Located in the heart of the French "hexagone," AUVERGNE, a land of extinct volcanoes (puys in French), is a rural, environmentally protected region that offers superb opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking and mountain biking. Charming Clermont-Ferrand is the region's largest city and home to the tire manufacturing company that birthed the adorable Michelin man-though you'd never guess at the proximity of a large manufacturer as you wander the narrow streets of the picturesque old quarter. It's also a perfect base for exploring the sites in the region, including Vulcania, a stunning multimedia exhibit of all things volcanic.
Auvergne's neighbor to the west, LIMOUSIN has preserved its quintessential "rural France" image. Its rolling countryside dotted with medieval villages offers the possibility for gorgeous driving tours. Those who love the outdoors are drawn here by the region's many waterways, popular for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.
Lovers of art and music can also enjoy world-renowned tapestries (Aubusson) and classical concerts in picture-perfect Romanesque cathedrals (Beaulieu). The region's capital, Limoges is famous for fine porcelain and enamelware; and the truly curious will enjoy visiting its many workshops and museums dedicated to the craft. It's a good base for exploring the region, in part thanks to the presence of 17,000 students revving up an otherwise quiet town. Several annual festivals attract local and visiting gays and lesbians, including Brive-la-Gaillarde's Gourmet Fair (early March), the Concèze's Flower Festival (April/May) and the Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne Strawberry Festival (May). Whatever time of the year you come, be sure to sample the world-famous foie gras, a regional specialty.
