Le Domaine de la Bretesche
Housed in the beautifully restored outbuildings of 15th century estate Le Domaine de La Bretesche, the magnificent Relais & Château property combines history and charm in a luxurious setting.
La Bretesche—located two hours by train from Paris in the Missillac district of the Loire Atlantique—is within easy driving distance of the chic seaside town of La Baule and the beautiful Morbihan beaches. The hotel offers 32 luxuriously appointed rooms (and suites); each one individually styled and decorated in a 'boudoir', 'rustic' or 'contemporary' style with sumptuous fabrics by Rubelli, Kenzo, Manuel Canovas, and Pierre Frey. Rooms enjoy views of the lake, or the sandstone-paved courtyard and its 100 year-old lime tree.
Guests can opt to stay in one of the 25 golf cottages, located in the woods along the golf course. Each cottage sleep two, four or six people, complete with fully-equipped kitchenette and an outdoor patio ideal for al fresco breakfasting; the hotel baker delivers pastries and fresh bread to the door every morning. All guests have access to the hotel’s restaurants, swimming pool, and tennis courts, as well as activities in the grounds including jogging, cycling, golf, and walking.
This fall, La Bretesche is offering several special packages, including a "Gourmand Escapade" and a "Golf Escape." Starting at 420 Euros (for the Gourmand) and 495 Euros (for the Golf) each package includes double accommodation, a seven-course Degustation menu (with aperitif and wine pairings) for two at Michelin one-star restaurant La Montaigu, and buffet breakfast in the lounge, as well as a round of golf with the Golf package. (Additional nights can be added for 220 Euros).
Discovering the hotel
The Bar des écuries (Stable Bar) Housed in the former estate stables, "Bar des Ecuries" offers a wonderful range of whiskies and liqueurs. Authentic wood and brass stalls provide a comfortable and cozy setting for a quiet nightcap, with Mozart and Vivaldi playing in the background.
Le Montaigu (Gastronomic restaurant) Located in the old coach house, the restaurant is run by the hotel’s young talented Chef Gilles Charpy, who scored an impressive 16/20 in the GaultMillau Guide and boasts one star in the esteemed Michelin Guide. Charpy's cuisine combines the flavors of Brittany and Provence, using carefully selected produce from the best local producers. An outstanding wine list features wines from France’s finest vineyards. Le Montaigu epitomizes the ultimate gastronomic journey in an elegant, intimate setting (only 60 covers per sitting).
Sport and leisure activities The hotel boasts two swimming pools – an indoor pool and outdoor pool, heated from May to September. There is also tennis, cycling, walking, mountain biking, golf, day trips around the region, and horse riding, polo and hunting available nearby. For those who prefer relaxation, the newly opened, state-of-the-art Spa de la Cour Carrée provides the ultimate pampering experience.
Le Golf de la Bretesche Set in a beautiful 100 year-old forest, Le Golf de la Bretesche stretches out below the château, at the heart of a 200-hectare estate. The magnificent 72-par 18-hole course is 6080m long, with straight greens and tree-lined fairways cut into diamond shapes. Unusually, the tees are planted with rosebushes, hydrangeas and rhododendrons and the ninth hole is one of the finest on the course thanks to its breathtaking view of the medieval chateau.
The course was designed by Bill Baker – designer of the Haut Poitou and Nîmes Vacquerolles golf courses – and attracts "golf-trotters" from around the world. However, with only a few well-placed bunkers to negotiate, golfers of any handicap can play at La Bretesche.
