Set in the heart of Provence, the Var's vineyards are the oldest in France. The Phoenicians introduced the first vines into Provence in around 600 BC. The vineyards expanded under Roman rule, and the first wines produced were rosés. Wine growing is hence a time-honoured tradition here, and the Var is currently the world's leading producer of fine rosé wines, born out of a long experience and in-depth research focusing first and foremost on quality. But Provence doesn't just produce rosé wines - its reds and whites are also widely reputed. The Var is home to no less than three Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée: Bandol, Côtes de Provence and Côteaux Varois. The Var also produces five "Vins de Pays".
