"Les heures du jour, dans l'intimité d'une famille de la haute société" [The Hours of the Day; inside a high-society family] is an exhibition running at the Musée Magnin in Dijon (Burgundy) from 19 November to 14 February 2010.
The exhibition is a journey through three centuries of life within a large townhouse, following the daily rhythm of a high-society family. It reveals the everyday habits and routines of the past, and their evolution from the late 17th century to the late 19th century.
Over the course of a day, Mr and Mrs and their children undertake a particular activity every couple of hours. The habits of washing, dressing, conversing, praying, reading or receiving guests have never stopped evolving, and are depicted in nearly two hundred rooms. Testimonies by people whose names and positions are now unfamiliar are displayed alongside traditional works of art.
The theme of the exhibition came from the history of the Musée Magnin itself, a former townhouse that had witnessed three centuries of private life. The fourteen rooms on the museum’s upper floors recreate these former spaces of private family life and depict something of how this residence, previously called the Hôtel Lantin and now a jewel of the Magnin collection, might have looked between the 17th and 19th centuries.
