See the exhibition "Napoléon et la Corse... d’Ajaccio à l’Empire" ?Napoleon and Corsica… from Ajaccio to the Empire? in the Musée de la Corse from 20 June to 30 December 2009.
The exhibition, and the ample literature which accompanies it, aims to retrace for the first time the complex relationship which linked Napoleon to Corsica and the role played by his insular, Latin origins in the destiny of the future Emperor.
Who could have imagined the meteoric, yet improbable, ascension of a young man from Ajaccio, coming from an island which had only just become part of France, so different in his culture, his origins, his codes and landmarks, his very language, from the national political elite? How did his Corsican-ness provide him with a springboard? Was this out-of-the-ordinary destiny accomplished despite the fact that he was Corsican or because he was Corsican?
In Corte, the museum rooms are organised in four main sections grouping works and documents from Corsica, the continent and several European countries. - The Corsica of the Bonapartes before 1795, retraces the social ascension of this ambitious family. - Period 1795 – 1815. - The ambiguity of Napoleon's relations with Corsica. - Stories, myths and souvenirs Useful information:
