Description - Arts and culture in France

Description of activity "Arts and culture in France"  :   Incoming Festivals to discover this summer:

Festival de Saint-Riquier du 8 au 19 juillet 2011

The Bay of Somme deserves a festival worthy of the region, its beauty, its magic and its charms. That is the ambition the Saint Riquier – Baie de Somme Festival sets itself, by welcoming musicians, actors, philosophers and scientists to its special setting.

Orchestrated by the young yet already widely-known talents, Sandra Moubarak and Anthony Leroy, the 27th festival has Time as its theme, as well as the work of Marcel Proust. These two young musicians offer an eclectic programme from baroque to contemporary, jazz to Early Music and all the featured events – concerts, conferences, meetings with artists – have the common goal of dealing with Time.

Each personality present at Saint Riquier, in their own style and in accordance with their art, will offer up their own concepts. Thus, the thoughts of Hubert Reeves will rub shoulders with those of Jordi Savall, the explorations of the Kronos Quartet will respond to the readings of Michael Lonsdake, the unique vocal range of Philippe Jaroussky will echo in the sonic warmth of the Modligliani Quartet.

Festival d'Auvers-sur-Oise du 4 juin au 7 juillet 2011

By opening the first pages of his fourth decade with the famous pianist Nelson Freire, the Festival d'Auvers-sur-Oise remains true to his highly demanding standards of boldness and excellence along his permanent working line of diffusion, creation and formation. These are declined through voice, piano and chamber music, from Bach to Richard Dubugnon, who thus becomes the tenth guest composer of the Festival.

This opening is followed by two highlights of this 31th season : an exceptional master class by Madame Gundula Janowitz and the world re-creation of Charles Gounod's oratorio "Saint Francois d'Assise", coupled with Psalm XIII of Franz Liszt, a musician honored all along the Festival in this year marking the 200th anniversary of his birth. Finally, before closing the book with the golden voice of Philippe Jarousssky, enlightened by his faithful group Artaserse, let's enjoy the dialogs we initiate each year, by visiting the exhibition of plastician artist Nicolas Kennett " the field, the crow, the scarecrow . "Nicolas pays an expressive tribute to the great sculptor Ossip Zadkine , celebrated by van Gogh' s village during the sunny months.

Saoû chante Mozart dans la Drôme du 17 juin au 27 juillet 2011

Mozart was 25 when he left the tyrannical reign of the archbishop of Salzburg who was employing him and fled to Vienna. By then he had composed more than half of his oeuvre, thirty of his symphonies, his violin concertos, nearly all his religious works, ten of his piano concertosand ten operas. Some of these compositions were written during his long voyages around Europe, many in this astonishing city that he didn't like, but which worshipped him nonetheless. The 22nd 'Saoû chante Mozart' festival will be devoted to this repertoire. This theme, although probably obvious, has not yet been presented by the only French Mozart festival. Fourteen concerts, from the North to the South of Drôme, will, as usual, feature quality French and international performers. And as an extra special surprise, a great English mime artist who will recount the story of the composer's life, in a burlesque style.

The Berlioz Festival is your opportunity to discover the romantic genius in his hometown, on the Côte-Saint-André and more widely in Isère, in the enchanting surroundings where he took his first steps as a musician. The success of the festival lies in this alchemy of authentic places, the enthusiasm of the participants – audience, volunteers, musicians – and an ambitious programme that offers magnificent symphonic concerts and astonishing events, popular and accessible to everyone, even those who would never imagine theselves sampling the delights of classical music. Festival de Tarentaise (musique et art baroque) du 28 juin au 13 août 2011

"Even a journey of a thousand leagues starts with a single step" according to a Japanese proverb. So what began with a small step, then two, becoming big, audacious and respected, celebrates its birthday today - the FESTIVAL DE TARENTAISE. It welcomes more than 2000 artists, international musicians and young talents who have become 'giants' in the world of baroque music. For 20 years it has astonished, charmed, bewitched and moved, as well as instilled the values of the music. It has been tempestuous at times, but it gave ourselves a good reason to grow even more and become what it is now: an unequivocable musical journey through Savoyard summers. Dear Public, this Festival also belongs to you, every year is dedicated to you, so together we wish it a very long and successful life. No theme for this event, simply happiness, celebration, ambition, the joy of being surrounded by our artists while still paying our respects to our region's rich heritage and creating, in our churches, stunning, priviliged and enchanting experiences, moments of intense meditation at the heart of music.
