What is the label for? The “Tourisme et Handicap” label allows disabled people to obtain reliable, consistent and objective information on the accessibility of tourist sites and facilities, related to the four main types of disability (motor, sight, hearing, and mental). The label also highlights the efforts being made by tourism professionals who are committed to making specific clients welcome and gives them a competitive advantage, at both national and European level.

The label is for all tourism professionals and service providers (accommodation, catering, tourist attractions and leisure sites).


How does the label work?

Application for the label is a voluntary process.

An interested professional receives a self-evaluation questionnaire that allows him or her to assess the level of accessibility and of the reception provided at his facilities, in relation to the various types of disability.

If the self-evaluation is positive, the professional can start on the actual process of acquiring the label and is then visited by assessors who will compile a register, according to the organisation’s specifications and evaluation grid, of the facilities already provided or those which need to be undertaken.

Once the assessment is made, the regional authority examines the assessors’ report bearing in mind both the regulations but also a human and common-sense approach.

The label, issued by the Tourisme et Handicap association for a period of five years, renewable following inspection to ensure that the various criteria are still being met, can be granted for one, two, three or four disabilities (motor, sight, hearing, mental) each of which is associated with a special pictogram.
