Montpellier is an example of carefully controlled city planning that is unique in Europe, with its modern Antigone and Port Marianne districts and dynamic Odysseum edutainment zone built by today’s leading international architects. Its modernism, in no way, detracts from the richness of the city’s 1000 year history: 70 fabulous courtyards in XVIIth - XIXth century private mansions, the oldest still-active Faculty of Medicine in the western world, medieval streets lined with boutiques, where High Street brand names sit side-by-side with quaint shops full of the charm of yesteryear, colourful stalls filled with the freshest fruits and vegetables at the open market beneath the arches of the city’s aqueduct and on the central Esplanade plaza.
Montpellier is also privileged to host one of the richest fine arts collections in Europe, with its recently renovated Fabre museum, plus numerous events, world-class international festivals, unparalleled fine dining and a tradition of great wines. In addition to its cultural appeal, Montpellier is a place where many people go to learn French. The city is well-known for its high quality teaching in many fields, ranging from medicine to extraordinary talent in violin-making.
Focus on Fabre Museum:
Montpellier Agglomeration’s Fabre Museum, an incredible art museum
The Fabre Museum offers visitors a major collection of paintings and sculptures from the 15th to 21st century. The museum often puts on major exhibitions of international stature.
Moreover, the private mansion Cabrières Sabatier d’Espeyran from the 19th century hosts the Decorative Arts Department and offers the only collection, in any French decorative art museum, for discovering the lifestyle of 18th and 19th century bourgeois and aristocratic society.
