The French Open’s home, Paris’ Roland Garros stadium, has been known as one of the best tennis venues in the world since its completion in 1928. Along with the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open, the French Open or “Tournois Roland Garros” is one of the four “Grand Slam” matches held each year. Roland Garros is the only stadium out of the four, however, with clay courts, which are more challenging to many players and therefore result in exciting and unusual matches. The French Open is also unique in that it was the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments to go “open,” meaning both professional and amateur players are welcome to compete.
