An exceptional geographical location and high quality natural heritage

With its varied landscape combining all of the typical features of the coast and interior, as well as the mountains, the Balagne region is in itself a little Corsica within Corsica.

Calvi and Ile-Rousse, the area’s two principal coastal towns, are renowned for the richness of their natural sites: long, fine sandy beaches, wild creeks, rocks and peninsulas.

They are separated by Lumio and the long Algajola-Aregno Bay up to the Ostriconi Delta, a jewel and one of the island’s coastal treasures.

The interior is distinguished by a series of villages perched on the slopes of terraced hillsides. Their sun-filled aspect has resulted in nature being kind to them, earning the Balagne the name of the “Garden of Corsica”.

Lama, Monticello, Corbara, Pigna and Calenzana are all exceptionally well-kept little niches that bring out the richness of the Balagne piedmont. From the hilltops, the Giussani valley’s landscapes- from which nature draws its strength far from the busy coast- take on a mountain-like appearance with the forest nearby.The sea, piedmont and mountains that together make up the Balagne’s landscapes offer a varied range of leisure activities, combining water sports and the great outdoors with sometimes unusual occupations such as paragliding and riding the waves on a jet-ski or windsurfing board. The region is also perfect for hiking, trekking and boating. Swimming and river fishing still leave the path open to a boat ride on a traditional boat.

While the Balagne remains a sheer source of delight, it also satisfies party-loving epicureans with a taste for arts and crafts. That’s the other side to this area renowned for its strong cultural identity.

The wealth of events and festivals of all kinds it hosts is living proof of this.

From the foire de l’Olivier (Olive Tree Fair ) in Montegrosso, Festivoce in Pigna and the Festival du cinéma européen (Festival of European Cinema ) in Lama... to the Rencontres Théâtrales (Theatrical Encounters) in Olmi-Cappella -and the list goes on- each village offers its own event. With its Rencontre d’Art Contemporain (Contemporary Art Encounter), Jazz Festival, Calvi on the Rocks, Rencontres de chants polyphoniques (Polyphonic Song Encounters) and Festival du vent (Wind Festival), Calvi hosts the largest range of events all year round.
