General description :
Located a mere 90 minutes to the east of Paris, the Champagne-Ardenne region is a land of contrasts in which visitors find vast, fertile plains carpeted with fields of grain, immense forests steeped in mystery and legends and the tranquil waters of large lakes.
Champagne-Ardenne is also a land of history whose pages are written in the many historic buildings that have come down to us through the centuries.
Finally, Champagne-Ardenne is a region in which lifestyle and gourmet cuisine are paramount. Champagne is one of the main reasons for this. Thanks to it, any holiday in Champagne-Ardenne is as light and airy as the bubbles that dance in the glasses.

THE TOP THREE…
Epernay, Capital of Champagne, situated in the heart of the vineyards, is a good base for exploring the Marne valley and its surroundings. Important Champagne Houses offer visits to the many kilometres of galleries dug in the chalk where millions of bottles are stored. To see : the Avenue de Champagne, the Hôtel de Ville, the Orangerie, the Château Perrier with the Museum de la Préhistoire, d’Archéologie Régionale et du Vin de Champagne, the tower and the Museum De Castellane, the portal of Saint-Martin, the Gabrielle Dorziat theatre, C16th stained glass in the church of Notre-Dame, the Synagogue (a remarkable rose window).
Reims, one of the most important French towns for its artistic and historic heritage. It owes its fame to the cathedral where many French kings celebrated their coronation, and champagne. The town is the headquarters of many important Houses. The Gothic cathedral is remarkable for the beauty of its architecture, the harmony of its proportions and the richness of its sculptures of which the most famous is the Smiling Angel. History is favoured in this town which was the birthplace of such famous Frenchmen as Colbert and Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle. The baptism of Clovis around 496 was the origin of a long series of coronations that finished with Charles X . The Palais du Tau, next to the cathedral, was once the bishop’s palace and is now a museum that houses amongst other treasures the paraphernalia of the last coronation. The cathedral, the Palais du Tau, the Abbey and the Basilica Saint-Remi have been classed World Heritage sites by UNESCO. You can learn all the secrets of champagne by visiting one of the many open to the public. A refined gastronomy with many famous restaurants awaits you in Reims and its surrounding area. To see : Fine Arts Museum, Museum Hôtel Le Vergeur, Former Jesuite College and the Planetarium, the Fort de la Pompelle, the Surrender Room, the Museum Automobile Reims Champagne, the Chapelle Foujita, the Basilica and the Museum Saint-Remi, the Cryptoportique, the Porte Mars, the Place Royale …
Troyes,a town famous for its artistic and historic heritage, is close to Burgundy. It’s famous today for its textile industry with many factory shops where you can hunt for bargains. You shouldn’t miss strolling in the historic centre which is said to have the shape of a champagne cork. The pedestrianized streets are lined with beautifully restored C16th half-timbered houses : the Maison du Boulanger, Tourelle de l’Orfèvre, six historic churches, embellished with exceptional stained glass widows such as Sainte-Madeleine and its rood screen sculpted in stone, one of the most beautiful in France, and the basilica Saint-Urbain, a Gothic masterpiece. Your stroll will lead you as far as the cathedral of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul and the Museum of Modern Art where you can admire the collection of P. and D. Levy, notably R. de la Fresnaye and A. Derain, whilst not forgetting Seurat and Balthus. The Maison de l’Outil in the Hôtel de Mauroy shouldn’t be missed as well as the Pharmacy Museum of the Hôtel-Dieu le Comte, the Museum des Beaux-Arts, and the Museum St Loup de Vauluisant.
